The former Union Minister for Finance, Pranab Mukherjee was on Sunday, 22 July 2012 elected as the 13th President of India. He will be sworn in as the new President on 25 July 2012 taking over from the first female President of India-Pratibha Patil.
Pranab Mukherjee, a candidate of the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government won the 2012 Presidential election by defeating the opposition Congress led National Democratic Alliance' nominee-PA Sangma by garnering a majority of about 69% of the total votes.
