Commission has decided to use EVMs in the by-elections in all the polling stations and voter's identification will be mandatory in the by-elections at the time of poll
The Election Commission (EC) of India has announced the schedule for by-elections to fill the vacancy in the Assembly Constituency in the state of Uttarakhand.
A press note released by the EC stated that a vacancy has occurred from 68-Sitarganj Assembly Constituency in the State of Uttarakhand, which needs to be filled up. After taking into consideration various factors like, festivals, electoral rolls etc., the Commission has decided to hold by-election to fill this vacancy on 8 July 2012. The votes will be counted on 11 July 2012.
The Commission has decided to use EVMs in the by-elections in all the polling stations. Adequate numbers of EVMs have been made available and all steps have been taken to ensure that the polls are conducted smoothly with the help of these machines, stated the press note.
In consonance with the past practice, the Commission has decided that the voter's identification will be mandatory in the aforementioned by-elections at the time of poll. Electoral Photo Identity Cards (EPIC) will be the main document of identity of a voter. However, in order to ensure that no voter is deprived of his/her franchise, if his/her name figures in the Electoral Rolls, separate instructions will be issued to allow additional documents for identification of voters at the time of poll in the said by-elections.
