Punjab: Execution of Balwant Singh Rajoana stayed

The execution of Balwant Singh Rajoana, convicted for the assassination of former Punjab CM Beant Singh has been stayed after the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee submitted a mercy petition to President Pratibha Patil.

Following the plea, the Union Home Ministry has asked the Punjab government to put off the execution of Rajoana, scheduled to be carried out on 31 March 2012. The execution of Rajoana is stayed till the order of the Supreme Court or till the order of the President of India.

Punjab chief minister Prakash Singh Badal and his deputy and son Sukhbir Singh Badal also met President Patil and sought her intervention as the issue had taken a political turn in Punjab, which witnessed a state-wide bandh yesterday, 28 March 2012 against Rajoana's hanging.
