Akhilesh Yadav will be sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh on 15 March 2012. The Samajwadi Party (SP) unanimously elected Akhilesh-the 38 year old son of SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav as their legislature leader.

Samajwadi Party managed to achieve a clean sweep in the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections 2012. The party won 224 out of the 403 assembly seats leaving behind the Mayawati led Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP).
