A day after the ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) lost its majority to the Samajwadi Party (SP) in the assembly election 2012, the party's President Mayawati resigned as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.

Mayawati on Wednesday, 7 March 2012 submitted her resignation to the Governor of Uttar Pradesh-BL Joshi. The Governor has subsequently accepted the resignation of the outgoing Chief Minister and asked her to continue on the post till the next government is formed.

Mulayam Singh Yadav's SP government is all set to form the next government in Uttar Pradesh and it is widely expected that Mulayam Singh will be officially throned as the new Chief Minister of UP on 12 March 2012.
