Clean sweep for SP in UP, SAD and Congress retained power in Punjab and Manipur respectively, BJP deposed Congress in Goa while Congress narrowly defeated BJP in Uttarakhand
Mulayam Singh's Samajwadi Party (SP) managed to achieve a clean sweep in the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections 2012. The party won 224 out of the 403 assembly seats leaving behind the ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Congress and the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP).
The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)-led government in Punjab created history by becoming the first to win two consecutive elections. The SAD-BJP combination won 56 out of the 117 assembly seats followed by Congress that won 46 seats.
In Goa, the BJP deposed the Congress from power by winning 21 of the 40 seats, while Congress won only 9 seats.
On the flip side in Uttarakhand, the Congress narrowly defeated the BJP by winning 32 seats out of the total 70 seats, while the latter won 31 seats.
Congress comfortably retained its power in Manipur by winning a majority of 42 seats of the 60 assembly seats.
