TRAI has released a pre-consultation paper on allocation of spectrum in 2G and invited for comments from stakeholders by 15 February 2012

SC asks TRAI to make fresh recommendations for grant of 2G licences
06-Feb-2012, 10:37

After canceling the 122 2G telecom licenses, the Supreme Court of India has directed the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to make fresh recommendations for grant of licence and allocation of spectrum in 2G band in 22 Service Areas by auction, as was done for allocation of spectrum in 3G band.

Following the order by the apex court, TRAI on 4 January 2012 released a Pre-consultation Paper on “Allocation of Spectrum in 2G band in 22 Service Areas by auction” and has invited comments from the stakeholders by 15 February 2012.

On the issue of grant of licences, TRAI in its 2010 consultation paper already recommended that all future licences should be Unified Licences and that spectrum be delinked from the licence. The Telecom Regulatory also placed the draft guidelines for Unified Licensing Regime in its website on 16 January 2012 and invited comments from the stakeholders.
